Finding The Right DUI Attorney

You hardly remember that night. You remember getting to the bar with your friends and you remember ordering your first drink, but the rest of the night seems like a blurry haze. You especially don’t remember getting pulled over for your first DUI. Now you’re facing a whole load of trouble. If convicted of a DUI, you will have that on your record for life, you will likely face either jail or probation and you will likely have to take a drug and alcohol course, among other thing such as community service.

Besides the obvious moral implications, you could have killed someone, driving while impaired is one of the worst things you could ever do. However, you’ve done it and it’s in the past. Now’s the time to forge forward and you can do that by getting a good DUI attorney. A DUI defense attorney will try to get you a lower sentence or to get the charge thrown out entirely. If you haven’t already, it’s time to find a good DUI attorney so that you can get your life back.

In Jail

Ideally, you should look for a DUI attorney before you actually get pulled over for a DUI. That way, you can do your research and find out who charges the least for the best possible service. However, most people don’t have the foresight to know that they’ll get pulled over for such a serious offense. Let’s be honest, most people drive while intoxicated because they think they’re ok to drive and nobody ever expects to be pulled over. That means most people do their DUI attorney shopping while they’re locked up for that very offense. This is not exactly a good time to look for a good attorney. You don’t have time to do research, to call around and to ask questions. The most you can do is hope that the one you choose is a good one and you’ll usually find your DUI attorney by looking through the phone book.

Referrals

If you’re in jail and you need a DUI attorney, and you want a good one, see if anyone you know has used the services of a DUI attorney in the past. If you know someone who has used an attorney for a DUI and that person got a lesser charged or got off completely, then you know that attorney is a good one. That’s a great way to find a good DUI attorney, by getting a referral from someone you know.

When you visit with your DUI attorney, it’s best to be completely honest. Recount the offense as best you can. Try to write down the date, the time, any witnesses and anything else you can remember, especially about the stop and arrest itself. You never know, the DUI attorney could get you off completely by listening to your story and then pinpointing something in that story that violated your rights, such as the officer giving you a field sobriety test in the rain, or the officer not reading your rights before you were asked questions or were arrested.
